Chapter 9: A More Regulated Self
Forming a self-regulatory strategy is key for people out there trying to improve various aspects of their lives. Promoting healthy habits earlier rather than later ensures that you keep at them for a longer period of time, allowing you to improve your health and wellbeing everyday!
Whether it's eating healthy, going to the gym weekly, or cutting back on spending, this self-regulation takes a bit of effort to start up but it most certainly will pay off in the long run.
Spend more time in the produce section, and less time in the candy aisle! Drink more water! Cut out bacon! Eat black beans and avocado!
These things won't make you an exemplar of human health overnight, but people's implementation intentions need to be set before they tackle any sort of healthy-living transition. Cutting out influences that may interfere with your end goal is the first step in many to achieving whatever it is you want. Maybe you're not looking to eat healthier, or you already do.
Personally, I need to take some steps in improving my finances and monthly budgeting.
Financial health is incredibly important, and learning to manage your finances is yet another process that takes some self-regulating. Implementing counteractive construal can help with any of these goals. Demonizing behaviors that would hinder your overall progress is a good way to slash bad habits, and continue down your path to success. Not making needless clothing purchases every week (because who does that?) and never spending an entire paycheck on random, small purchases (even when I get the overwhelming urge to) allows me to always make sure I have enough for rent/utilities and other expenses that may come up. (Cooking at home lets me save money as well!)
Marketers can use this concept to construct feedback loops for their products or services, allowing customers to track their progress in real time. Whether it's an app for calorie tracking, or a budgeting site, these services help customers to (hopefully) be better human beings.
